WHAT IS THE EXCHANGE PROGRAM?

Aiming for approximately 12 participants, this free program is intended for students enrolled in French Immersion from across British Columbia. It offers a one-of-a-kind experience: **welcome a student from Québec **for two months, then head east to live with them and explore their world in turn!

The goals? To immerse yourself in the French language, discover a new way of life and new cultures, push your limits, and learn more about who you are.

The program takes place over two years:

  • The preparation year: Grade 9 or 10
  • The exchange year: Grade 10 or 11

While one cohort is on their adventure, the next cohort is already getting ready to go!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR TEACHERS

1- Contact the Program Coordinator to register your school. Each school must complete the 00. School Participation Request Form, which requires sign-off from your principal to offer this program at your school.

2- Delegate the role of Sponsor Teacher to a French-speaking teacher at your school. This is a two-year commitment (supporting students in the application process, in preparation for and during the exchange).

3- Promote the program to students at your school ! Once a school is registered, the program coordinator will send sponsor teachers promotional materials (digital and/or printed) to promote the program. You’ll also receive access to the Application Package to share with interested families. If you would like, request a class-presentation/visit.

For more details, please refer to the document Overview of Tasks (Sponsor Teacher Checklist). For any questions, Katie, the program coordinator, would be happy to help at echangequebec@cjfcb.com!

Those were the best two months of my life. During this exchange, I not only improved my French, but I also made friends for life and learned a lot about the different cultures we have in Canada.

Participant, 2025-2026 Exchange Program

My favorite moments were when I took part in traditional Québécois activities. Like when I went to the sugar shack or went ice fishing.

[One of my favorite moments from the program was] my first day at school: everyone was SO nice!

GUIDES AND RESOURCES

For many participants, the Exchange Program marks their first extended time away from home—9 weeks! While the exchange is a rewarding experience, how can they safely navigate new environments in their non-dominant language, recognize their emotions, and step outside their comfort zones? Do participants understand their role, both in BC and in Québec, and the importance of being a good host to their exchange partner?

To better support them, Carl Ruest of the Department of Language & Literacy Education at the University of British Columbia (UBC), has developed a series of resources in collaboration with the CJFCB:

  • Guide Part A: Welcoming Your Exchange Partner addresses preparing for your exchange partner’s arrival and supporting them during their stay in BC.
  • Guide Part B: Going on Exchange covers preparing for your stay in Québec: tips for mentally preparing yourself, immersing yourself in a new linguistic and cultural environment, and the effects of this enriching experience.
  • The Ethnographic Journal is a tool for personal development during the exchange. Guided through exercises to first reflect on their identity and values, followed by analyzing surprising lived-moments from their exchange, the Ethnographic Journal helps participants broaden their perspectives and better navigate new experiences and cultures.
